Life Sciences - Biomedical
Biomedical is by far the largest subsector of Biotechnology in the North West. There are approximately 200 core biomedical companies employing over 23,000 people, making the North West one of the UK’s top three bio clusters.
This includes six multinational pharmaceutical companies - AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, BMS, Novartis, Sanofi Aventis and GSK.
The North West is one of the largest producers of pharmaceuticals in the UK: exports of £3.4 billion in 2007 (UK#2) with a Balance of Trade £2.4 billion 2007 (UK#1)
There is a significant healthcare sector including such companies as SSL, Cardinal Health, Baxter, Terumo, Advanced Medical Solutions, Unilever, Vernon Carus, Depuy (J&J)
The North West also has several internationally renowned basic and clinical research centres in Manchester & Liverpool.
The North West Biomedical strengths include technologies such as drug development; bio & pharma manufacturing; tissue engineering; medical & molecular imaging; bio/health informatics; the ‘Omics’ integrative & systems biology; clinical genetics, trials & ethics. Also therapeutical areas including regenerative medicine & stem cell therapy; cancer; neurodegenerative diseases; cardiovascular diseases; infectious diseases & vaccine development.
In the last year UKTI have supported companies to attend Arab Health, Medica, Bio Japan and Bio 2008 as well as providing the opportunities to visit many other markets.
